Certified Data Centers:What does it mean to be Tier III or Tier IV Certified?
TIER certification is an international standard that classifies the reliability and availability of a data center.
The two organizations whose standards are most often mentioned in the industry are TIA (Telecommunications Institute of America) and Uptime Institute. Both organizations classify their standards into four levels. However, the standards differ between the two. An important concept that we must be clear about in relation to data centers and TIER certification is redundancy and how quickly they can recover from a problem to bring all services back online.
Tier 1 = Components without redundant capacity (for example, 1 UPS or 1 data provider).
Tier 2 = Tier 1 + Devices with redundant components.
Tier 3 = Tier 1 + Tier 2 + Dual power supply equipment and multiple output links.
Tier 4 = Everything is redundant (network, power supply, output links, etc.) but in this case with many redundancy solutions and not just one as a backup.
