Certified Datacenters: What does it mean to be Tier III or Tier IV Certified?

The TIER certification is an international standard that allows the classification of the reliability and availability of a Data Center.

 

The two organizations whose standards are most mentioned in the industry are TIA (Telecommunications Institute of America and Uptime Institute). Both organizations classify their standards into four levels. However, the standards differ between the two. An important concept to be clear about Data Centers and TIER Certification is redundancy and how quickly they can recover from a problem to bring all services back online.

Tier 1 = Components without redundant capacity (e.g. 1 single UPS or 1 single data provider).

 

Tier 2 = Tier 1 + Devices with redundant components.

 

Tier 3 = Tier 1 + Tier 2 + Devices with dual power supply and several outgoing links.

 

Tier 4 = Everything is redundant (network, power, outbound links, etc) but in this case with many redundancy solutions and not just one as a backup.
